For the early detection of leaks
in water supply networks
|
|
The longer it takes to identify
that a network is leaking the more revenue is lost and the
greater the loss of precious water resources. In addition
to the more conventional methods of leak detection the installation
of permanent noise loggers from the SePem® family of instruments,
has proved to be a cost effective tool in early identification
of water loss. By permanently monitoring sections of the
system, which have previously been proven leak free, SePem®
01 will alert you when a leak does develop. SePem® 01 is
a highly sensitive piezo accelerometer noise microphone
and data logger that transmits its stored information to
the Master control unit via radio. |
|
SePem® 01 - deployment
SePem® 01 noise loggers are mounted, by magnetic contacts,
onto valves or underground fire hydrants. The magnet can be mounted
on the long or the short side of the logger body allowing it to
be installed horizontally or vertically. The low profile presented
by the horizontal mounting offers great flexibility and a wide
range of installation positions. |
|
| The SePem® 01 can fit
in particularly tight spaces. Even with very low clearance
heights between the top of the valve and the underside of
the cover. The magnet can be located on the SePem® 01
body eccentrically so it can even fit onto decentralised
spindles. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
The loggers record sound
over a defined period, either on a repeat basis or just
the once, (user programmable). The results are transmitted,
at pre defined times, (user decides when best), to the
Master.
At regular intervals, or when an increase in water usage
is identified (increased night line readings), the loggers
are interrogated by the Master from the safety of your
vehicle by a “drive by” the loggers.
If there is a leak the SePem® 01 will send an alarm
which is clearly indicated on the Master, both visually
and audibly. Users require no special training. There
is no PC or post measurement analysis required. |
|
|
The basic information transmitted to the Master is the Minimum
Noise Level, which is the quietest noise recorded
during the preceding measuring cycle. Normal customer usage fluctuates
up and down however leaks never become quiet. If the minimum noise
level has increased over its normal level it is likely to be a
leak that is the cause. |
SePem® 01 - Master
The SePem® 01 - Master is used to programme and read the
loggers’ parameters by a two way radio connection. All settings
are freely selectable by the user. No PC is required at any
point!
It offers even the less experienced operator the ability to receive
quick and reliable leak results due to the simple and intuitive
menu structure combined with the easy to use “jog dial” & soft
keys. |
|
| At its simplest that is
how easy the SePem 01 is to use but it can do a lot more...

|
SePem® 01 - As a survey tool
The SePem® 01 - may also be used as a leak survey tool.
Due to the acoustical nature of leak location background noise
very often makes it impractical to listen for leaks during the
day. This means that the only alternative is to work at night,
which has many drawbacks amongst them being it is expensive to
pay staff night rates and there can be health and safety implications,
particularly in busy cities. By using the SePem® 01 these
problems are overcome. The loggers can be programmed to:
- start logging immediately or up to 30 days in the future
to log continuously, or during a window to best suit your
local conditions- it may not be the best idea to record at 0200-0400
in the nightclub district but it may be the quietest time in
the residential areas
- to log at intervals from 1 second to 1 hour
- to log once and then turn itself off
to log permanently over 24 hours always storing the minimum
noise level recorded during the last measuring period
Alarms can be set automatically using a built in algorithm
or programmed by the user. This means that meaningful reading
can be taken over just one night |
|
to transmit stored information at times to best suit your
working practices. What is the point in having the radio transmitting
and using valuable battery capacity over the weekend when you
are not going to carry out any surveys? |
Online real time noise measurement
The SePem 01 uses bi-directional radio communication which
means an online real time noise level can be seen without getting
out of the safety of your vehicle. This function can be used to
decide if a measuring point is suitable prior to leaving a logger
in position; if the measuring point is reading high levels before
you put the logger out it is probably already leaking! |
|
If after carrying out a survey or “drive- by” an alarm is shown
you can look at the current real time noise over the radio link
- If the noise level has disappeared (unlikely) you may conclude
it was usage during the logging period and it may not indicate
a leak.; if is still noisy you can be confident it is a leak.
|
Patrol or “drive-by” information
Routine “Drive-by’s” can provide more information than simple
“Leak No leak”. The Master displays: |
This screen displays the noise levels logged throughout the last
measuring period. |
|
|
|
The recorded noise level was
continuously high during the measuring period - High probability
of a leak |
|
Long life loggers...
All battery powered loggers have a finite life. Some other loggers
on the market, due to their method of construction, must be thrown
away when the batteries have expired; SePem® 01 noise loggers
are different. Under standard operating conditions SePem® 01
will last at least 5 years, even longer with different settings.
However there is no need to throw it away when the battery does
expire; it can be fully refurbished and given another lease of
life at that time. When you add this into the whole of life costs
of the SePem® 01 it makes financial as well as technological
sense. |
